You may be confused on the matter that whether you need only Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi+3G.
If you think that you may have to use the iPad outside your home, then you must go for Wi-Fi+3G. But if the usage is limited only within your home, then a simple Wi-Fi taken on a monthly plan will be more than sufficient.
For the 3G, you can take temporary plans only for those limited days when you are planning to go for any travel vacation. If the use is not so urgent in your vacation, you can avoid taking the 3G.
As far as space is concerned, you can have options of 16 or 32 or 64 GB.
If you plan to load a large numbers of movies and music, then you should definitely need 64 GB of space. Such a huge space is required only when you install a lot of applications including photos and a huge amount of Internet downloads.
But, to begin with, it is always advisable to use 16 GB Wi-Fi as it is a first generation device.
You go for one vacation and after coming back, you can decide whether 3G was so much necessary or not. In that case, you can always take 3G before going for the next vacation.
