Free iOS In-App Goods with No Jailbreak from Russian Hacker
How difficult is it to make IAP system public? How good is Apple’s protection of its iTunes payment system? It might be superior great, however one Russian hacker assures he has blown open it and now users might enjoy free in-app content with no jailbreak process.
This could be the most horrible nightmare for Apple and other tech companies that try to protect their products and partners from hackers. While they hardly work on security and protection, hackers from all over the world are constantly in search for ‘holes’ and various methods to make paid content available for free.
It seems that hacker Alexey Borodin from Russia has succeeded in making Apple’s IAP system public.
Free Content for iPad and iPhone
According to Borodin, he has managed to find out a method that helps iOS users to get in-app content without paying for it. Free goods become real if tablet and smartphone owners use the special server hosted by Alexey.
This server can do some tricks. By changing your iPhone or iPad DNS settings it redirects your IAP to another server and makes the company believe that you have paid for your in-app or game purchases. The system works on any iDevice and there is no need to jailbreak iPad or iPhone to use it, Borodin states.
In his interviews and blog, Borodin said he was not afraid of Apple’s response to his exploit which he created being angry at some developers who took too much money for their in-app goods.
While Russian hacker jokes that now Apple will hire him, his method is good for one of the IAPs and cannot work for all of them. Still it does work, so some people who like to play apps and games with paid in-app purchase options might try it out.
As for Apple, it gave only one comment to the issue. As the company spokeswoman Natalie Harrison mentioned, they are “investigating.”
